  1. How beautiful. It reminds me of learning about a Japanese-American woman who sits in the forest preserves in Chicago and environs and sketches meticulous botanical images of prairie plants - plants sometimes viewed as weeds, sometimes as wonders, but often overlooked.

  2. You probably already knew that it took a long time to settle the Upper Midwest, in part because of conflicts with local Indians but also because prairie plants often have roots as deep as 6 feet and it wasn't until steel-bladed plows were invented that that earth could be cut.
