Other Peoples' Paradise: Joshua Tree

So Lily Stockman is not the only one.  There have been other New Yorkers who have given it all up and moved to Joshua Tree.  Or at least taken up half-year residence.   WHY?  One might wonder. Is this your idea of paradise?

Dr. Seuss-ey kind of trees.  Scrubby grass.

Strange rock formations.  (Hey, that's positively prehistoric!)

Why would NY'ers, who can barely make it to Pennsylvania ("Where America starts") come to Joshua Tree?

To live in this empty landscape.  Totally bereft of coffee bars, fresh mozzarella, sushi?

No, no nail bars either!

 Maybe Lily can tell you.

Me, I came to visit a dead guy on my wedding anniversary.  Am I a cool wife or what?  Anyone know about Gram Parsons?

Strangely Joshua Tree marks the beginning of a whole new life for me.  The weekend I visited, I found my house in L.A.

That's my story, I'm sticking to it.

  1. I wouldn't want to live there, but I used to visit every spring during my month-long roadtrip season. My very favorite in this area, though, is the Mojave National Preserve, which is even starker but FAR less populated.

  2. I had a good (female) who used to go out to the Mojave all by herself in her pickup truck and sleep under the stars. I could never have done that but I'm sure it's unbelievably beautiful.

  3. and yes I did mean friend. i have to slow down.

  4. Ha! I live just up the road from the multi-colored house that looks like Gaudí's pet desert project. And the sprawling yellow ochre house with the corrugated roof is Sacred Sands, a HEAVENLY B&B across the road from us. If you want a fabulous place to stay and don't want to rough it, I highly recommend it. By far the nicest place to stay in the hi-dez. WD is right- the Preserve has a pristine wildness to it that is truly remarkable. It's a trip living out here, and although I can't imagine staying in the desert forever, it's the perfect place for me right now. (And I can satiate my sushi fix when I'm in LA.) Glad you got to see Gram Parson's spot- what a good wife you are!

xoxo your new friend in the hi-dez;)
